Betaflight Beginner’s Setup Guide

From flashing firmware to basic configuration

Betaflight is the most popular open-source firmware for FPV drones, offering precise control, advanced tuning, and a huge community for support. Whether you’ve built your first drone or bought a ready-to-fly (RTF) quad, you’ll need to configure it in Betaflight Configurator before taking to the skies.

This guide walks you through the essential steps — from flashing firmware to your first flight-ready setup.

1. Install Betaflight Configurator

  • What it is: A free desktop app that lets you configure your flight controller (FC).
  • Where to get it: Betaflight Configurator on GitHub or the Chrome Web Store (older versions).
  • Tip: Always download the latest stable release unless you have a specific reason to use a development build.

2. Connect Your Flight Controller

  • Use a USB cable to connect your FC to your computer.
  • Select the COM port in Betaflight Configurator.
  • Click Connect.

💡 If the FC isn’t detected, install the STM32 VCP driver or Zadig driver depending on your board.

3. Flash the Firmware

  1. Identify Your FC Target
    • Check the model name printed on your FC or in the Betaflight documentation.
    • Example targets: MATEKF722SE, TMOTORF7HD.
  2. Backup Settings (if applicable)
    • If the FC has previous settings you want to keep, use the CLI command:
      • Copy/paste the following command: diff all
      • and save the output to a text file.
  3. Flash
    • Go to the Firmware Flasher tab.
    • Select the target, version, and enable Full Chip Erase.
    • Click Load Firmware (Online) → Flash Firmware.
    • Disconnect and reconnect after flashing.

4. Basic Configuration

Ports Tab

  • Assign UART ports for your receiver, GPS, or other peripherals.
  • Example:
    • UART1: Receiver (Serial RX enabled).
    • UART3: GPS (set to “GPS” in Peripherals).

Configuration Tab

  • Select your ESC protocol (e.g., DShot600 for most modern ESCs).
  • Enable OSD for in-goggle flight info.
  • Set your motor direction (reverse props or standard).
  • Enable features like:
    • Airmode – keeps motors spinning at zero throttle for better control.
    • Anti-gravity – smooths altitude during throttle changes.

PID Profile

  • Beginners can leave default Betaflight PIDs for their quad size (defaults are tuned well for 5-inch drones).

5. Receiver Setup

Receiver Tab

  • Select “Serial-based receiver” → “CRSF” for Crossfire/ELRS or “SBUS” for FrSky.
  • Move the sticks to check channel mapping.
  • If mapping is wrong, change the Channel Map (e.g., AETR1234).

6. Modes & Arming

Modes Tab

  • Assign an Arm switch (mandatory).
  • Assign a Mode switch for:
    • Angle Mode (beginner stability).
    • Horizon Mode (flips allowed).
    • Acro Mode (full manual).
  • Assign a Beeper switch (optional but useful).

7. Calibrate Accelerometer & ESCs

  • Accelerometer: Place the drone level and click Calibrate Accelerometer in the Setup tab.
  • ESC Calibration: Usually unnecessary for DShot protocols, but required for PWM/Oneshot.

8. Check Motor Direction

  • Remove props before testing.
  • Go to the Motors Tab, enable motor control, and check each motor spins in the correct direction (as shown in the diagram).
  • Reverse motor direction in BLHeli Configurator if needed.

9. OSD Setup

  • On-Screen Display Tab: Add voltage, timer, RSSI, and flight mode indicators.
  • Arrange them so they’re visible but not blocking your main view.

10. Save & Test Before Flight

  • Disconnect from Betaflight.
  • Test arming and disarming on the bench (props off).
  • Double-check:
    • Receiver input works.
    • Motors respond correctly.
    • Failsafe is set (motors stop when radio is off).
