ELRS

Features, Setup & Long-Range Performance

Discover what ExpressLRS is, how it works, and why it’s the preferred FPV radio link for long range and ultra-low latency. Learn about features, setup, Gemini mode, and pro tips for maximum performance.

What is ExpressLRS?

ExpressLRS (ELRS) is a high-performance, open-source radio control (RC) system designed for FPV (First Person View) drones and other RC models.
In just a few years, it has taken the FPV community by storm — thanks to its ultra-low latency, exceptional range, affordability, and rapid open-source development.

At its core, ExpressLRS is the control link between your transmitter (radio) and your drone’s receiver. It transmits pilot inputs to the flight controller, which translates them into precise drone movements.

Why FPV Pilots Choose ELRS

  • Ultra-Low Latency – Update rates up to 1000Hz (2.4GHz) for instantaneous stick response.
  • Long-Range Capability – LoRa modulation enables kilometres of reliable control, even at high packet rates.
  • Open-Source & Community-Driven – Constant updates, new features, and broad hardware compatibility.
  • Budget-Friendly – Lower cost than proprietary systems like TBS Crossfire.
  • Flexible Frequency Bands – 2.4GHz for speed; 900MHz for penetration & extreme range.
  • Cross-Compatibility – Any ELRS hardware works together, regardless of brand.

Core Features of ExpressLRS

1. Frequency Options

  • 2.4GHz – Higher packet rates, lower latency, smaller antennas. Best for racing, freestyle, and mid-range.
  • 900MHz (868/915MHz) – Lower frequency for long-range missions and better obstacle penetration.

2. Packet Rate Flexibility

  • F Modes (FLRC): F1000, F500 – Ultra-low latency, ideal for racing; shorter range.
  • LoRa Modes: 500Hz, 250Hz, 150Hz, 50Hz – Great for long range & interference resistance.
  • D Modes (DVDA): D500, D250 – Redundant data for noisy environments.
  • Full Modes: 333Hz Full, 100Hz Full – Up to 16 full-resolution channels (popular with fixed-wing).

3. Dynamic Power Output

ELRS automatically adjusts transmitter power based on signal quality, extending radio battery life and reducing heat.

4. Built-In Telemetry

Get real-time data like:

  • Link Quality (LQ)
  • RSSI
  • Battery voltage/current
  • GPS coordinates (if available)
Displayed on your radio screen or FPV goggles’ OSD.

5. Hardware Compatibility

  • Transmitters: Works with built-in ELRS radios like Radiomaster Boxer, Jumper T20S, Radiomaster Pocket.
  • External Modules: JR or Lite Bay modules for radios without built-in ELRS.
  • Receivers: Options with PA+LNA, TCXO, diversity, or integrated SPI for whoops.

Gemini Mode – Enhanced Link Stability

Introduced in ELRS 3.3, Gemini Mode transmits and receives on two different antennas and frequencies simultaneously, improving link stability.

Requirements:

  • Gemini-compatible TX and RX
  • Firmware 3.3 or newer (e.g., BetaFPV SuperG Nano, Jumper T20S Gemini)

Pros:

  • Smoother link in noisy environments
  • Increased reliability for racing & long-range

Trade-off:

  • Slightly higher power consumption

Setting Up ExpressLRS

  1. Download ExpressLRS Configurator (Windows, Mac, Linux)
  2. Select Hardware Target for your TX module or receiver
  3. Compile & Flash Firmware via:
    • USB/UART
    • Wi-Fi (receivers)
    • Betaflight Passthrough
  4. Bind Receiver:
    • Use a binding phrase (auto-bind)
    • Or press RX bind button
  5. Configure in Betaflight:
    • Enable Serial RX on the correct UART
    • Select CRSF protocol
    • Map channels
  6. Set Failsafe Actions in both radio and Betaflight

💡 Pro Tip: Always display LQ and RSSI in your OSD for early warning of signal issues.

FAQ

Is ExpressLRS better than Crossfire?
For latency and packet rates — yes. For extreme long-range, both are excellent, but Crossfire has more years in the field.

Does ELRS affect my video feed?
No. ELRS is your control link — it works alongside analog, DJI, Walksnail, or HDZero video systems.

Can I use ELRS with DJI FPV?
Yes, you can run ELRS for control and DJI for video at the same time.
