Fremantle’s Abandoned Power Station

Urban Decay Reimagined

Animated FPV Drone Video

In this sequence filmed at the Fremantle Power Station , we explored something new. Using FPV drone flight paired with post-production animation, the video fuses urban exploration with stylised storytelling — revealing decaying structure in motion and injecting a visual pulse into frozen paint and fading slogans.

At The Flying Emu, we’re constantly experimenting with how drone cinematography can go beyond scenic views, using motion, mood, and digital effects to tell stories that feel both raw and surreal.

The Fremantle Power Station

Tucked along the coast south of Fremantle, the South Fremantle Power Station is one of WA’s most iconic abandoned structures. Built in the 1950s and decommissioned in the ‘80s, the massive industrial building now stands empty — its hollowed interior and graffiti-covered walls drawing photographers, urban explorers, and drone pilots alike.

From the ground, the space feels heavy with history. But from the air, the composition shifts: concrete grids, open rooflines, and long shadows give the site a structured visual rhythm. It’s one of the few places where ruin becomes geometry — a raw, cinematic playground for anyone willing to explore it with care.

Working on a creative concept that needs drone?

We work with musicians, designers, and content creators to bring bold ideas to life.

Animation Meets Aerial Grit

This shoot began as a test — a creative trial to blend FPV drone movement with animated overlays and motion graphics. Using a lightweight FPV setup, the drone lifted slowly above the iconic graffiti slab that reads “It’s for us”, capturing the text from above before dipping back down for a low, sweeping pass.

Through carefully tracked post-production, the letters were brought back to life: new colour, subtle animation, a visual “revival” of something otherwise fading into concrete. The aim wasn’t to distort the artwork, but to reflect it — a nod to the message, reframed in a way that pulses and breathes.

Every movement was mapped to the drone’s flight path. Every effect was timed to enhance the original footage without overpowering it. The result is a hybrid: half-documentary, half-digital motion piece, set inside one of Perth’s most visually complex locations.
