What is a Flight Controller in FPV Drones?
Enhance Your flight
The flight controller (FC) is often called the brain of an FPV drone. It’s a small circuit board packed with sensors and processors that takes your control inputs, interprets data from the drone’s sensors, and then tells each motor exactly how fast to spin to achieve the desired movement. Without it, an FPV drone would be nothing more than a collection of motors and wires — unable to stabilise, manoeuvre, or even hover.
Main Functions of a Flight Controller
Interpreting Pilot Inputs
- When you move your sticks on the radio transmitter, the signals are received by the drone’s receiver (RX)and passed to the FC.
- The FC calculates how each motor should respond to achieve the movement you requested (throttle, yaw, pitch, roll).
Stabilisation and Sensor Management
- The FC uses onboard sensors like:
- Gyroscope: Measures rotation.
- Accelerometer: Measures tilt and acceleration.
- (Sometimes) Barometer: Measures altitude.
- (Sometimes) GPS module: For navigation and rescue modes.
- It constantly makes micro-adjustments to keep the drone stable — especially important in Acro Modewhere no auto-leveling is provided.
- The FC uses onboard sensors like:
Flight Mode Control
- Switch between modes like Acro, Angle, Horizon, GPS Rescue, or Altitude Hold.
- The FC ensures smooth transitions between these modes.
Data Output & Telemetry
- Sends important flight data (voltage, signal strength, GPS location) to your goggles via OSD (On-Screen Display).
- Allows for logging via Blackbox to analyse flight performance and tune settings.
Popular Flight Controller Models
- SpeedyBee F7 V4 – Feature-rich, app-configurable via Bluetooth.
- iFlight Blitz F7 – Great for freestyle and racing.
- Holybro Kakute H7 – Excellent build quality and sensor integration.
- Foxeer F722 V3 – Known for durability and stable performance.
- T-Motor F7 HD – Designed for digital FPV systems like DJI.
Firmware Compatibility
Flight controllers run specialised firmware, which determines their capabilities and user interface.
- Betaflight – Most popular for freestyle and racing; fast development and community support.
- iNav – Designed for long-range and GPS-assisted flights; supports autonomous missions.
- KISS – Known for exceptionally smooth flight feel and ease of setup (requires KISS hardware).
- EmuFlight – A Betaflight fork with an emphasis on flight feel for freestyle pilots.
💡 Tip: Always check firmware compatibility before buying an FC. Some boards are optimised for certain protocols (like DJI HD systems) or have features like built-in Bluetooth for wireless tuning.
Why the Flight Controller Matters
Choosing the right FC affects:
- Flight performance (stability, precision, and responsiveness).
- Feature availability (GPS modes, logging, tuning options).
- Future upgrades (digital vs analog video, protocol support).
For beginners, a reliable mid-range F4 or F7 flight controller running Betaflight is a safe, future-proof choice.

Drone filters are an affordable, powerful way to improve your aerial photography and videography. Whether you want smooth motion blur, richer colours, reduced glare, or clearer night shots, the right filter can help you achieve it.
Choose your filters based on the conditions, plan your shots, and experiment. Once you start flying with filters, you’ll wonder how you ever shot without them.
